Do you know the risks of not protecting your business in the digital world? Look at the case of the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT).

In today's world, where digital information has become one of the most valuable assets, cybersecurity is essential to ensure the protection of confidential data.

Additionally, we have to take into account the progress in data protection laws such as the GDPR or the Chilean project that regulates the protection and processing of Personal Data and creates the Personal Data Protection Agency.

These events place significant responsibilities on companies that handle customer and employee data, making it imperative to pay close attention to these points, both for protection and self-regulation.

In recent days, we have witnessed another alarming data breach affecting both current and former U.S. government employees. This incident occurred at the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) and was revealed on Friday, May 12, 2023; the breach exposed the personal information of 237,000 individuals.

The aforementioned security breach at the USDOT highlights what we at Zenta have been warning our clients and partners about for many months now: the importance of having clear rules and procedures in cybersecurity.

In this case, the vulnerability compromised the systems used by the institution to process transit-related benefits, which are reimbursed to government employees to cover certain transportation costs.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, the initial investigation into this data breach revealed that the affected systems were primarily used for administrative functions, such as processing employee transit benefits. Fortunately, the security of the transit systems was not compromised by this breach.

In response to this incident, the department has taken steps to address the situation. A thorough investigation has been launched, and access to the transit benefits system has been restricted until it is fully secured and restored.

"It is important to note that this is not the first time the U.S. Department of Transportation has been the victim of cyberattacks."

In previous years, both in 2014 and 2015, there were breaches of confidential data affecting millions of people. These incidents put the personal information of more than 22 million individuals at risk, including more than 4 million current employees, and even compromised the fingerprints of 5.6 million people.

It is suspected that, in these cases, Russian hackers used the well-known SolarWinds software to infiltrate US federal agencies.

These situations clearly demonstrate the need for proactive cybersecurity measures. Having clear rules and procedures in place to safeguard sensitive data is becoming essential in an increasingly threatening digital world.

At Zenta, as experts in information technology, we understand the importance of cybersecurity and are committed to providing effective solutions to protect our customers' sensitive information.

We invest significant effort in implementing rigorous policies, adopting cutting-edge technologies, and providing ongoing training for both our team and our clients' teams. We strive to guarantee the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of your data.

It's crucial not to wait until you're the victim of a data breach. Protect yourself today and trust our cybersecurity expertise.
